Ways To Spot a Shady Contractor

So you need some new cabinets installed in your kitchen. You go online and find a few contractors to get quotes from. After emailing a few, you finally settle on one, and they give you a quote. It seems like a good price, so you agree, and they set a date for installation. A few weeks later, the contractor shows up with his crew and starts installing your cabinets. But something just doesn’t seem right… There are many unpleasant surprises along the way.

If you’re ever in doubt about a contractor, here are six tips on how to spot a crooked contractor.

1. They Don’t Have Proof of Licensing and Insurance

If a contractor can’t provide you with proof of their licensing and insurance, that’s a huge red flag. Any reputable contractor will show you their license and insurance policy without beating around the bush. Having a license means that the contractor has been vetted by the state and is qualified to do the job. Insurance protects you in case of any damages that may occur during the project. If they were reluctant to show you this proof, maybe they’re not as reputable as you thought.

2. They Keep Appearing and Disappearing

Some contractors will show up just like you had agreed and start the work. They will do a few measurements here and there and maybe do some installations. However, in the course of the project, they will suddenly disappear for days or even weeks at a time. If this happens, it’s best to just find another contractor. A reputable contractor will ensure that the work is completed on time and to your satisfaction.

3. They Don’t Bother About Permits

If a contractor doesn’t bother to get the right permits for your project, that’s another red flag. Depending on the type of work being done, a contractor will likely need to get one or more permits for your project. If they don’t bother to do this, that could mean two things: they may not be experienced enough to know what permits are required, or they’re simply trying to get the work done as quickly and cheaply as possible without following the proper channels. Either way, you don’t want to work with a contractor like this.

4. They Don’t Have References

Would you ever hire a contractor if they can’t provide any references? Probably not. A good contractor will be more than happy to show you the work they’ve done for other people. If they can’t provide you with any references, that’s a sign that they’re either new to the business or they’re not as reputable as they claim to be.

5. They Don’t Like Written Agreements

A written agreement is important for any project, big or small. It protects both you and the contractor by spelling out the terms of the agreement. If a contractor doesn’t want to sign a written agreement, that’s a huge red flag. They may be trying to avoid liability in case something goes wrong with the project.

6. Their Price Is Too Good To Be True

If a contractor’s price is much lower than the others you’ve gotten, that’s usually a sign that they’re not as reputable as the others. They may be cutting corners to save money, or they may not be experienced enough to know how much the project should really cost. In either case, you’re better off hiring a more expensive contractor who will do a better job than someone who will do something cheaply, and it’ll end up costing you more in the long run.

Some other ways to spot a shady contractor are:

  • They’re poor in communication.
  • They make unrealistic promises.
  • They have lots of hidden charges.
  • They avoid your questions and make excuses.

These are some of the signs you hired a bad contractor. Hiring a contractor should be a careful process. You don’t want to end up with subpar work or, even worse, no work at all. By understanding these signs, you can make sure that you end up with a contractor who is both qualified and trustworthy.
